California - Francis Ford Coppola Winery (1)

Dave and I had dinner at  Francis Ford Coppola in Sonoma twice. (The food, service and scenery were amazing.)  Both times I stopped in the tasting room.  In total, I tasted 12 wines so my tasting reviews are split into three days; this being the first day and the next two days will be reviews two and three.

Sofia* 2010 Blanc de Blancs is a semi-dry sparkling wine and a blend of Pinot Blanc, Riesling, and Muscat.  I found the flavor to be mellow and that of peach, and honey.  The bubbles just dance on your tongue.  Elegantly wrapped in pink cellophane.

In the tasting room the pourer slowly rolled the cellophane wrapper down the bottle to the base of the neck saying, "you never undress a lady".

Winemaker's Notes:  Tangerine, peaches, honeysuckle, tropical fruit, pineapple, and green apple.

Sofia Blanc de Blanc is also available in 187 ml. cans which can be purchased individually or in a decorative pink box of four.  These were served to the models during New York Fashion week.  They just put the straw in the can and could sip on the bubbly while walking around.  Great for picnics and poolside where you don't want the worry of glass.

Sofia* 2010 Riesling is semi-dry.  It is 100% Riesling grapes that are grown in Monterey, CA. This had a fragrant aroma of orange blossom and honeysuckle with a mild flavor that was slightly creamy and a bit tart. I just love the distinctive "Sofia" shaped bottle.

Winemaker's Notes:  (Not available.)

Coppola 2010 Moscato is new for the winery.  Because it is a blend  (96% Moscato and 4% Alicante Bouschet) it has the distinctive label of Coppola's blends Bianco and Rosso.  The color of Coppola Moscato is a light pink, with a very distinct aroma of raspberry. Flavors are apricot with a finish of spice.  The mouthfeel was a bit thin/watery.

Winemaker's Notes:  Those who’ve never tried Moscato are in for a delicious surprise. Highly fragrant and lusciously fruity, our Moscato offers a beautiful perfume of pears, pineapple and orange blossoms followed by light, delicate flavors of apricots, lime and clove. Fermented and finished in stainless steel to capture pure, sweet fruit impressions, this unique rosé can be enjoyed as an apertif or with a variety of hors d’oeuvres as well as after dinner sweets, soft cheeses or fresh fruit.

*Sofia is named after Francis Ford Coppola's daughter.
