California - Francis Ford Coppola Winery (2)

This is review two, of three, for the wines I tasted at Francis Ford Coppola.  Today is the review of the the wines offered in their "Family Tasting".

Coppola 2010 Diamond Collection Sauvignon Blanc is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  This was not the mild California Sauvignon Blanc that I had been tasting on my trip. Rather this leaned more toward the Sauvignon Blancs of Marlborough, New Zealand.  The aroma was decidedly citrus and grapefruit.  The flavor was a bold fruit forward grapefruit and citrus with a slight tartness.  Refreshing and crisp.

Winemaker's Notes:  Tropical fruit, grapefruit, jasmine, tangerine, lemongrass, peach and minerals.

Director's 2009 Pinot Noir.  The aroma was raspberry and cherry.  The flavors however, were not fruit, but clove and spice.  Balanced and enjoyable.

Winemaker's Notes: This vintage of Director’s Pinot Noir blends grapes from Carneros, which produces fruit with spice and earth notes, with grapes from the Russian River Valley, an area known for creating rich, dense wines noted for bright cherry and cranberry flavors. As a result of combining fruit from two appellations, we designate this wine “Sonoma Coast.” Both of these regions experience a cool climate and fog that rolls in from the coast, conditions that favor Pinot Noir.

Our 2009 Director’s Pinot Noir boasts an intense perfume of fresh strawberries, orange peel and tea leaves, while the silky texture accentuates sweet, luscious flavors of raspberries, cherries, cloves and spicy oak.

Coppola 2009 Diamond Collection Claret is a Bordeaux blend, bottled with the distinctive gold wire net.  The aroma was tobacco and coffee.  The flavor was spice and coffee with a hint of cherry.  Tannins were slight.  I know when I do my tastings, this is a customer favorite.

Winemaker's Notes:  Plums, currants, tobacco, blackberries, cherries, and espresso.

2010 Bianco is the latest vintage and a white blend (they did not tell me the blend at the tasting room and I was not able to find Winemaker's Notes).  This had a delightful and refreshing aroma of citrus, peach and pear.  The flavor of citrus was overpowered by it's tartness.

Winemaker's Notes: (Not available.)
