Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc, 2010 and Blackstone Merlot, 2007

Friday's tasting was on two nice wines.  Both were well received by customers.  The prices were also reasonable.  I'm always excited when I taste out wines that are great value.  Customers have a price point of $10 and these fit the bill.

Cupcake Sauvignon Blanc 2010 ($10) is from Marlborough, New Zealand and is 100% Sauvignon Blanc.  A fruit forward grapefruit flavor with a strong gooseberry tartness on the finish. Low level of acidity. Crisp and refreshing.  I enjoy these bold flavors in a Sauvignon Blanc and the customers that tasted did too.

Winemaker's Notes:  (2010 not available)

Blackstone Merlot 2007 ($9) is from California.  Although a  Merlot, it is a blend of 86% Merlot, 10% Syrah, 3% Cabernet, and 1% Zinfandel.  The grapes are from 65% Monterey County, 10% Mendocino County, 14% Madera County, 7% Sonoma County, and 4% Paso Robles.  In 2010 Blackstone Merlot was the number one selling Merlot in the U.S.  I do not know where it ranks this year.  The wine has light tannins with dark fruit  flavor and light oak.  Very popular with my customers.

Winemaker's Notes:  Our Merlot is our signature “Blackstone Style” with rich fruit aromas, supple oak characteristics and soft tannins. You’ll discover dark cherry and berry aromas with a touch of clove to please the palate. The texture is ripe and soft in the mouth, with a smooth, lingering finish. Blackstone Merlot is the perfect companion to a seasoned rack of lamb, grilled burgers, and tomato-based pasta dishes. Bring it to a neighbor’s BBQ or your own backyard table.
