A couple years ago I tasted Goats Do Roam White and Red (wine from the Western Cape of South Africa). I did not like them. This past weekend I had the opportunity to taste them again and thought I'd give it another try in the hopes they had improved. Heck, it was free and there's nothing worse than getting a bottle of wine home and finding out you made a mistake. Besides, I needed to know how they taste in case they are worthy of recommending to customers (or NOT).
Goats Do Roam 2010 White is a blend of 68% Viognier, 17% Roussanne, and 15% Grenache Blanc. The flavor was a bitter grapefruit pith. I thought it was undrinkable. None of the Winemaker's flavor profile showed. Save your money for another wine of your choosing.
Winemaker's Notes: Intense aromas of soft pear and litchi accompanied by floral notes and coconut hints. A rounded palate shows rich apricot and marzipan with a slight oily texture on the finish, balanced well by fruit-driven freshness.
Goats Do Roam 2009 Red is a blend of 72% Shiraz, 15% Cinsaut, 7% Grenache, 4% Mourvèdre, and 2% Carignan. It had a smokey, earthy flavor with a hint of cherry and some acidity. Not bad, but there are other reds I enjoy more and at a comparable price ($8.99). Can't say you'd be disappointed with this, but don't expect anything great.
Winemaker's Notes: Vibrant ruby red colour. Spicy red fruit on the nose with hints of black cherry. Medium bodied palate, with good length and structure ending in a smooth finish. Flavours of ripe fruit and sweet oak.
